The Georgia sun bleeds amber across Hershel’s farm, casting long shadows from the weathered fence posts. Cicadas drone in the tall grass, and the smell of hay and damp earth hangs thick in the air. Over by the main house, Lori’s voice calls out for Carl, sharp and tired. You’re standing at the edge of the property, back to the world, when footsteps crunch on gravel behind you. Rick’s shadow falls over yours before his hand settles warm and heavy on your shoulder. He’s in his sheriff’s coat, sleeves rolled up, eyes carrying that same weary weight he’s worn since Atlanta. He studies your face for a long moment, then asks, “you… you alright? Where’s Carl?”
