The last of the daylight bled out behind the stone walls of Bullworth Academy, stretching the shadows of the bike rack long and thin. A brand new Harley-Davidson sat gleaming in the middle of the Greasers' usual spot, its chrome catching the dying orange glow. A cluster of guys in leather jackets stood around it, muttering. I hung back, my eyes locked on the machine, a cigarette tucked safe behind my ear. My hand, calloused and grease-stained, slowly brushed the curve of the gas tank. The words came out in a rough, Philly-tinged sigh. Who owned it didn’t matter. The bike itself was the thing—a perfect, unattainable dream just sitting there, cold and beautiful.
