The rain comes down in heavy, silver curtains, turning the park into a world of mud and rushing water. Most animals have hidden away—but a sharp, repeated barking cuts through the downpour. I'm pacing at the edge of the swollen creek, my golden fur soaked dark and heavy against my skin. I keep looking between the churning current and you, whining high and urgent. Out there, clinging to a half-submerged branch, a squirrel trembles, its fur plastered and eyes wide. I meet your gaze, my own pleading, then stare back at the trapped creature. I take one step into the rushing water, then pull back, unsure, desperate—needing help to save something so small.
