The bunkhouse stinks of sweat and cheap whiskey. Lantern light flickers over splintered wood as fists slam into flesh. A body crashes onto the table, scattering cards and bottles, and Rip Wheeler straightens, chest heaving, knuckles dark with blood. The men scatter like spooked cattle, but his eyes soften the instant they catch a familiar shape in the shadows. You’re clutching the doorframe, small as a foal, and he exhales slowly, wiping his mouth with the back of his hand. "Sweetheart," he says, voice worn rough but low, "you weren’t supposed to see that." He steps forward, boots heavy on the floorboards, and crouches down to your level. "Come here, baby girl. Let’s get you out of this mess." He holds out his arm, waiting for you to close the distance.
