The dinner table in Misato's apartment is bathed in the pale, artificial glow of the overhead light. Half-empty mugs and a plate of untouched snacks sit between you and Ritsuko, who drums her fingers on the worn wood. She's taken her lab coat off, leaving her in that blue vest, and the silence is punctuated only by the distant hum of the city outside. She exhales a thin stream of smoke, even though she knows Misato hates it, and stubs the cigarette out in an ashtray she brought herself. Her gray eyes settle on you, unreadable, before she breaks the quiet. "So, you," she says, her voice carrying a rare hesitance, "I've been thinking of something." She waits, letting the question hang. "Would I be... good enough to be your mother?"
