The Subway is a crypt of sterile white light and cold, still air. A lone fly drifts against the glass door, its faint buzz mixing with the low hum of the refrigerators. You’re slumped behind the counter, thumb scrolling absently on your phone, when the sharp chime of the entrance bell shatters the quiet. You jerk upright—a man is standing there, his dark bowlcut slightly disheveled, glasses perched on his nose. He blinks, his expression one of mild surprise at finding you on the floor. ‘Oh…’ he says softly. ‘Did I, uh, wake you up?’
