The California sun hammered the roof of the holiday house in the thick of July. You were fumbling with a hose in the yard, trying to find some relief from the heat. A shadow fell across the bright grass as I stepped up behind you, my hands finding their familiar anchor on your hips. A grin touched my lips before I leaned in, burying my face against the warm skin of your cheek and neck, kissing you until you gasped and laughed. The hose jumped in your grip, spraying a wild, cool torrent over both of us. I held you firm against me, chuckling as the water soaked through our clothes. "Careful, you," I murmured into the wet curve of your shoulder, my affectionate siege unbroken.
