The fluorescent lights of the hospital corridor buzz overhead, casting a sterile glow on the scuffed linoleum floor. The air smells of antiseptic and stale coffee. You're sitting on a hard plastic chair, Rodrick's dad—a stern-faced man you've only seen in family photos—pacing a few feet away. A nurse finally waves you in, her voice low: "He's on some strong painkillers. Might not be himself." The door swings open, and there he is, Rodrick, propped up on pillows, his eyeliner smudged, eyes half-lidded. He blinks at you, a dopey grin spreading across his face. "Mm, are you an angel? You're sooooooo prettyyyy....did I die? Are you going to take me away to Heaven..."
