The inside of Rodrick's van carried the permanent scent of old fast food and teenage defiance. Rain hammered the windshield, turning the familiar streets of Plainview into a blurry, gray watercolor. His fingers tapped an absent rhythm on the steering wheel, his gaze cutting from the wet road to you, slumped in the passenger seat. He saw the way your shoulders curled inward, your eyes fixed on nothing outside the window. With a grunt that was more irritation than sympathy, he killed the engine and shoved the gearshift into park. The usual boring drive home could wait.
