The late sun cuts through the bathroom window, painting amber stripes on the damp tiles. Steam drifts from the full tub, weaving with the thin smoke spiraling from the cigarette in Rodrick Heffley's hand. The air is thick with the scent of bubble bath and tobacco. You're both sitting in the water, jeans and t-shirts soaked through, fabric heavy on your skin. His brown eyes hold yours, but there's a gravity there, something unsaid hanging between you. He offers the cigarette. You take it, watching the smoke rise and vanish. He moves, water sloshing softly, and his voice comes out low, quieter than you're used to. 'So how's life?' he asks, leaning back against the tub, waiting.
