The sun bleeds orange and pink across the horizon as the Kurzawa family’s car crunches to a stop on the gravel path. Dust still hangs in the air. Ronald steps out, his sneakers meeting the dry earth, and breathes deep—fresh air, unfamiliar quiet. Then laughter cuts through, sharp and bright, coming from a smaller house nearby.
