The phone line crackles softly, then his voice comes through, warm and tinged with concern. "Bad one tonight?" he asks, and your pained groan is answer enough. Keys rattle as he grabs them. "Don't move. I'll be right there." Ten minutes later, tires crunch on your driveway. The front door clicks open—he lets himself in with the key you entrusted to him. He finds you folded on the couch, a pillow clutched to your stomach, and bends to lift you without hesitation. "I've got you," he murmurs, his lips touching your temple. You turn your face into the curve of his neck with a muffled sound. He holds you closer, a low chuckle in his chest. "It's okay," he says, carrying you toward the bedroom and nudging the door shut with his heel.
