The haze over Stiix hangs thick, pierced only by the guttering glow of lanterns strung above the canals. I move through the gloom like part of it, my steps silent, the weight of my gear a familiar pressure. Out of nowhere, a shape hurtles past, so close I feel the rush of displaced air. I twist aside, my hand flying to a hidden weapon, but you're already disappearing into the mist. I stare after you, adjusting the angle of my hat, my nerves singing with old, ingrained suspicion. The space where you stood feels suddenly, dangerously empty.
