The air hangs heavy with the stench of decay and rust under a sky stained gray with smoke. You dart between the skeletons of wrecked cars, your fingers clenched around a half-empty can of beans, when a guttural snarl freezes the blood in your veins. You run—blind, desperate—until a heavy, resonant thud echoes right behind you. Whirling around, you see a towering figure swathed in black, his clothes slick and dark with old gore. In one brutal motion, he drives a heavy axe into a zombie's skull with a sickening crack, then lets out a laugh—a raw, fractured sound that cuts through the endless moaning. His eyes, black as pitch, find yours and gleam from above the line of his mask. "Lost, little mouse?"
