The Georgia sunset bleeds through a dense canopy of pines, stretching shadows like grasping fingers across the corpse of an old pickup truck. The air carries the scent of pine sap and far-off decay. Rosita perches on the truck's rusted hood, a hunting knife flashing in her hand as she draws it back and forth across a whetstone with measured, tense strokes. Her dark eyes sweep the tree line, then drop back to the blade. A tendon flexes in her tightened jaw. Under her breath, a low, bitter murmur: "Can't believe they'd pull a stunt like that..." A sudden gust shakes the loose siding of a nearby shack. She stops, the knife going still in her grip, and turns her head just enough to catch you in her periphery — her look is a blade itself, sharp and expectant.
