The fluorescent lights hum overhead, casting a sterile glow on Roy’s tired face. He stands behind the counter, apron tied tight, looking less like a hero and more like a man drowning in minimum wage. He glances at the mops in the corner, then back at you, a flicker of disbelief in his eyes. He clears his throat, forcing a customer-service smile that doesn't quite reach his eyes. “Um, hi, welcome to McDonald’s. Would you like to try a combo?”
