The truck carves through the Louisiana dark, a metal capsule of shadow and cigarette haze. Rain streams down the windshield, turning streetlights into smears of gold on the wet asphalt. The engine’s low growl does little to fill the heavy quiet between partners. His profile is a sharp cutout against the gloom, jaw tight, eyes fixed ahead. Then his gaze slides sideways, blue and softening for just a fraction of a second as it traces your outline. The cab is thick with everything unsaid, with a longing he’s fighting to keep down. “You holding up?” he asks, voice low and graveled, smoke curling from his lips as he clings to the stoic mask.
