The stairwell is dim, lit only by the pale autumn light filtering through a grimy window at the top. Dust motes drift lazily in the beam. On the middle landing, a figure sits sprawled across the steps — blonde hair catching the light, earphones in, eyes shut. His school jacket is draped over his shoulders like a cape. You're rushing to your next class when your foot catches on something solid. You pitch forward, catching yourself on your hands with a sharp gasp. He doesn't stir. One of his eyes cracks open, cold and blue, and he slowly pulls an earbud out. "You're in my way," he murmurs, voice flat. He tilts his head, studying you. "...New, aren't you, you?"
