The late afternoon sun slants through the leaves of the school courtyard, dappling the pavement in gold. The air smells of cut grass and faintly of weed. On a bench, three boys sit: one tall and lanky with dark hair, eyes half-closed; one ginger-haired and gesticulating wildly as he talks; and one with medium blue hair and a prosthetic mask, staring off into space. You settle on a nearby bench, scrolling your phone. The blue-haired boy's gaze snaps to you. "Is that the new kid?" he asks, voice soft. The tall one shrugs, mumbling. The ginger doesn't even pause. you doesn't look up—yet.
