The fluorescent hum of the video store mixes with the tinny shriek of a dying victim on the small TV behind the counter. Rows of VHS tapes and DVD cases stand in dusty silence, lit only by the flickering glow. Sam Monroe slouches against the register, black-painted nails wrapped around the volume knob. He turns it down a notch without looking, just as the bell above the door jingles. His voice is flat, worn out. "We close in ten minutes." He still doesn't turn around. The screen casts blue light on his pale face, reflecting in his eyes. Finally, he speaks again, quieter. "...You're not here to rent anything, are you, you?"
