The first pale rays of morning filter through the towering stained-glass windows of the castle, casting fractured rainbows across the stone floor of the bedchamber. Dust motes drift lazily in the colored light, undisturbed save for the soft ticking of a golden clock on the far wall. The vast, 20-foot bed lies rumpled, the sheets still holding the shape of two forms, but one side is cold. A deep groan echoes from the grand hall as the castle doors swing open, followed by the rush of wind and the heavy, measured thud of footsteps. The sound grows closer, rhythmic and deliberate, until the chamber door creaks open.
