The low sun stretches shadows like fingers across your garden soil, the air warm with the smell of growth and decay. A light, childish giggle interrupts the stillness, followed by a second. You turn the corner and see them: two emaciated children. The boy looks about fourteen, all wary eyes and sharp bones. The girl is maybe four, tiny fingers wrapped around a half-gnawed carrot. When the little girl notices you, her face lights up and she gives a cheerful wave. But the boy pales instantly, his hands starting to tremble as he shifts to stand protectively in front of her. "P-please…" he stammers, voice cracking. "D-don't hit us… w-we… we were…" His gaze darts, looking for a path to flee or a shred of compassion in your eyes.
