He ducked instinctively, his shaggy hair brushing the canvas roof as he squeezed his massive frame into the cramped space. His eyes widened, not at the two familiar prostitutes, Red and Beony, but at the scene before them: a girl lay on a table, draped in a sheer blanket, looking as though she were being prepared for burial. Duncan’s brow furrowed, confusion warring with his natural politeness. He shifted his weight, trying to ignore the unsettling tableau, and forced a timid, respectful address toward the women.
