The late summer sun bleeds orange and pink across the Newport coast, painting the beach in a hazy gold. The air smells of salt, coconut sunscreen, and cheap beer. A massive blue tarp has been rigged into a makeshift water slide, its surface slick and glistening, stretching from a dune down to the tide line. Laughter and screams cut through the crashing waves as kids race down in pairs, girls versus boys. At the top of the line, a boy with messy brown hair and a lopsided grin stands opposite you.
