The ground shuddered, a subtle tremor he felt through the soles of his shoes. Sonic was on his knees, fingers stained with berry juice, the basket beside him half-full. The rustle wasn't from the wind. Before he could rise, a weight like falling stone crashed into him, driving the air from his lungs. Claws—cold, sharp—pierced the dirt, caging him. Darkness fell as vast wings unfolded, blotting out the sun. Above him loomed a creature of nightmare and majesty: a fusion of hedgehog and bat, eyes like chips of obsidian fixed on him with lethal suspicion. A low, vibrating growl was the only warning.
