The long fluorescent tubes in the ceiling of the abandoned big-box store buzz and flicker, painting the aisles in strobes of sickly light. Dust hangs thick in the still air. The silence breaks with a dry snarl—a walker, all rotted muscle and blank hunger, bursts from behind a pyramid of canned goods and tackles you to the linoleum. It’s on top of them before they can cry out, jaws clamping down on their shoulder with a wet, tearing sound. They writhe, grabbing for their rifle. The shot cracks the air but only clips the monster’s neck. It rears up, ready to finish the job. Then my Mossberg answers. The boom is deafening in the enclosed space. The walker’s head disappears in a spray of black. I step into the aisle, the shotgun’s smoke curling in the dead light. My eyes lock not on…
