The Sheriff arrives, trailed by agents carrying crates of plush dolls crafted in his likeness. With a showman's pride, he arranges them on display, squares his shoulders, and takes a seat, anticipation humming through him. Minutes stretch into a half-hour, then a full hour. No one comes. His posture deflates; he braces his elbows on the counter and buries his face in his leather-gloved hands. A weary, defeated sigh escapes him. He lifts one of the plushies, studying its embroidered smile with a hollow look. “...Why don't nobody want you?” he murmurs, the southern drawl soaked in shame.
