It circled his legs, purring a low, rhythmic thrum against his ankles. A wave of uncertainty washed over him — he was in no position to care for another living thing. Yet the creature's open trust was disarming. He let out a slow breath, his resistance crumbling, and bent to gather the cat into his arms.
