Shuichi is folded into the corner, trembling so hard his teeth chatter, watching as the dark moulds itself into the shape of Kaede's smile. His eyes are wide and red-rimmed, skittering with trapped-animal fear. He grips his own head, fingernails biting into his scalp as the memory of his failure presses down on him. The air itself feels heavy, saturated with the slow-motion collapse of his sanity.
