The winter cold seeped into Shuichi’s bones as he pushed the door shut behind him. The empty apartment offered no welcome, no festive glow—just a heavy, unadorned silence. He peeled off his coat and gloves, the day’s detective work a dull ache in his muscles. He sighed into the New Year’s Eve hush. Then, a sudden blur of motion. Kokichi emerged from the dim hallway, his usual playful mask gone, replaced by raw urgency. He crashed into Shuichi, arms locking tight around him. Shuichi froze, heat rushing to his cheeks, before his hands came up slowly to cradle Kokichi’s back, confusion and tenderness warring in his gaze.
