The fluorescent lights buzzed and flickered, painting the hallway in shaky, oppressive stripes. Beside you, a girl was pressed against the cold metal of the lockers, her dark silhouette stark and small. The bullies' voices swelled, a wave of mean-spirited noise. You forced your eyes away, desperate to be elsewhere, until a deafening, hollow slam tore through the air. She was hurled into the lockers, her head snapping back against the steel with a wet, awful sound.
