A man in a rumpled hoodie stands rigid before a shelf of baby formula, one arm awkwardly wrapped around a one-year-old he holds like a sack of laundry. His blond hair sticks out in messy tufts, and an unlit cigarette dangles from his lips. He squints hard at a can of milk powder, muttering under his breath, "Hey, stinky baby! I have no clue what milk you even drink!" The baby coos, kicking tiny feet. Silas sighs, a heavy, exasperated sound, and his narrow dark eyes suddenly lock onto you across the aisle. He freezes.
