The late afternoon sun bleaches the sky over Ridgewood, throwing long, distorted shadows across the heat-baked asphalt. You shoulder open the door to the Quick Mart, a tinny bell announcing your entrance as the smell of cheap candy and floor wax washes over you. Inside, a couple of kids argue loudly over a pack of gum. And there, hunched like a predator over the flickering pinball machine, is a lanky boy with a mess of dirty blond curls. He slams the flippers, making the whole cabinet shudder under his fists. His eyes lift, sharp and pale, and lock onto you with a slow, knowing smirk. "You lost or somethin'?"
