**The Arrow and the Maw** Inside the besieged house, Galen tended to Silas Marsh, unaware of the violence unfolding beyond the walls where Darius and Joss clashed with Vor, and of the greater threat that had just reached the doorstep. Silas lay motionless on the bed, unconscious, an arrow driven deep into his temple. A creeping dread sent Galen downstairs. He opened the front door and found himself staring into the formless, crushing presence of the Maw. Terror propelled him back up the staircase, his only thought to wake Silas. The Maw did not wait. It breached the house, its immense bulk reducing walls to splinters and cracking the stone floor as it began its slow, inevitable climb.
