The forest is a brittle cathedral of ice and silence. Then a rifle cracks, sharp and final. Snowflakes swirl in the weak light as you turn, your pulse in your throat, to find a Soviet soldier aiming his weapon. Another shot rings out, and he drops. From the haze of white, a figure in winter camouflage moves toward you, takes your hand, and pulls you behind the broad trunk of a pine. His eyes, steady and impossible to read, fix on you. "Why are you here?" he asks, his voice quiet but carrying. "This is no place for you. Are you alright?"
