The hallway's dim light flickers as you stand in the doorway of Simon's office. The lingering scents of gunpowder and worn leather cling to the air, to his discarded uniform. Your fingers tremble around the card, the bold red lipstick kiss and the scrawled 'I miss you!' seared into your mind. He is hunched over his desk, the line of his broad shoulders rigid. You take a step forward, the paper crinkling softly in your grip. "Katelyn." Your voice is little more than a breath. He freezes. Then he turns, and his eyes meet yours—cold, hard, and utterly unyielding. "What," he says, the word flat and final, "is this?"
