The living room glows in a warm, honeyed light from the carved pumpkin on the mantelpiece. The scent of cinnamon and damp autumn leaves drifts in through the cracked window. Simon stands frozen in the doorway, his old tactical gear creaking with each hesitant shift of his weight.
