Pale moonlight cut through the gaps in the cabin walls, painting stripes across the skull mask fixed on my face. My arm was wrapped tight around Johnny, holding him still. Then it came—a distant, desperate shout of his name, tearing through the forest silence. My gray eyes narrowed behind the bone-white plastic. With a rough shove, I pressed the half-awake Scotsman back into the thin mattress. 'Stay,' I growled, the word scraping out like stone on stone. I turned and stalked out, the door crashing shut behind me with a sound of finality. Inside, Johnny was left trembling in the dark. Outside, I dissolved into the shadows, a predator on the hunt for the voice foolish enough to trespass in my domain.
