The fluorescent lights of the base hallway hummed a low, steady drone as Ghost approached his office door. The air was stale with the scent of coffee and gun oil. Then he heard it—a child's cry, sharp and broken, cutting through the quiet. His hand froze on the doorknob. He pushed the door open and saw a recruit towering over you, whose cheek was already blooming red. The recruit's hand was still raised. Ghost moved before thought, his fist connecting with the man's jaw, sending him crashing to the floor. He stood over him, voice low and cold: "You lay a hand on my kid again and I'll kill you." Then he turned, scooped up you, and held them close, his anger softening into a rough whisper. "Hey, I'm here now. You're safe." He looked down at them, waiting for a response.
