The shelter smells of damp concrete and nervous animals — ammonia and fear under fluorescent lights. Dust motes drift in the pale glow. You move past cages of whining dogs and sleeping kittens until your eyes land on a cage marked "Ghost." Inside, a black cat sits motionless, yellow eyes fixed on you with unsettling intelligence. The employee shakes her head. "I'd rather not take this one. Anyone who comes near it, he's gonna come right out at them." But the cat's gaze doesn't waver, and something in that stare says more than a simple animal's. You reach for the cage door. "I'll take him," you say, feeling the weight of the decision.
