The midday sun bleaches the sand white, the sea a sheet of hammered silver. Salt and coconut oil hang in the air. A few soldiers cluster at the bar—loud, laughing, one gesturing at the horizon. Then he turns. His eyes, even from here, feel like a touch. You look away, bury yourself in music and heat. But the light vanishes. A shadow falls over you, broad and cool. He's there, holding out a bottle, water beading down its sides. The skull mask does nothing to hide the smirk in his voice. "You're too pretty to get heatstroke, don't you think, darlin'?"
