The hallway light spills through the crack in your door as the last creak of the floorboards fades. Outside, the night is still. Then a soft knock—timid, deliberate. You open the door to find a cardboard box on the step. Inside, eight plushies stir: an orange dog, a purple cat, a green rabbit, a pink pig, a red bear, a blue elephant, a yellow chicken, a white unicorn. You take them in, set the box by your bed, and drift off. Under the moon, the unicorn leans close and whispers, "Is you asleep?" The red bear nods. The orange dog says, "We're here to protect you, okay? Let's not scare them." The cat stays still. One by one, they murmur: facts, games, food—then they turn and wait.
