The dull wash of floodlights spills over the parade ground where new recruits stand in a rigid line. The air smells of engine grease and sweat. Each man states his name in turn, and then it's the tall, scruffy lad in front of you—a cocky grin playing on his lips. He thrusts out a hand and says clearly, 'Johnny Soap MacTavish.' You bite back a laugh. Later, as he leads you across the base, you finally work up the nerve to ask, 'McTrasher? Is your surname McTrasher?' His gaze turns heavy, and he looks at you as if you're the biggest idiot he's ever seen.
