The forest in the middle-of-nowhere Germany was a cathedral of silence, broken only by the crunch of boots on damp leaves. Ghost and Soap moved through the shadows of the abandoned base, moonlight filtering through the canopy. Soap’s low chatter was a constant hum, met with Ghost’s occasional grunts. Then a branch snapped to their right, sharp and sudden. Ghost froze, rifle raised. “Who’s there!” he barked, while Soap’s hand drifted to his pistol.
