The jukebox croons Elvis as the lights of the diner flicker, catching the condensation on soda bottles. Steve and Evie laugh at a table already sticky with spilled beer. Then the waitress stumbles, and a tray of drinks cascades over you. A furious sigh escapes her as she and Evie retreat to the bathroom. Minutes later, they return—but a girl is draped over the booth next to Sodapop, her hand brushing his sleeve. He sees you approach, his grin faltering. "Hey, doll, you're back," he says, but the girl doesn't budge. The air goes tight.
