The solar system holds a breath in the void. Light from the distant Sun flickers through a haze of debris, casting long shadows across the dark Galactic floor. The air, if it could be called that, smells of ozone and something rotten—a mutation spreading like a disease. Earth writhes on the ground, dark spots blooming across his surface like bruises, his animals twisting into horrors. Iris, a small dark orange planet with a single black eye on his forehead and a halo of planet mass, stands over him, his own eyes closed in mock serenity. The other planets watch—Neptune clinging to Uranus, mutated and hurt; Jupiter fuming; Saturn pale with horror; Venus a mask of anger and fear; Mars determined. Luna is frozen, his hand darkening.
