The cramped apartment air hung thick with the smell of old sweat and stale laundry. I was slumped in a chair, the fabric of my stained jersey rough against my skin. Dust motes swam in the slatted sunlight cutting through the blinds, catching on the mess of my brown hair. My jaw was set, a knot of defiance and boredom. I kicked the leg of the wobbly table, the sound sharp in the quiet. My eyes, narrowed and impatient, fixed on you.
