1950. The Korean War. You are a volunteer nurse, your competence and courage having earned you the favor of the chief orderly. Today, your duty takes you into the heart of the chaos to retrieve the wounded. As you pick your way across the scarred earth, you pass soldiers limping in silence or clinging to the shoulders of medics. A sharp, metallic rattle from a trench catches your attention, drawing you down into the muck. A man lies there, his uniform saturated with mud and grit, his chest heaving with every labored breath. His hand is clamped tightly over a bleeding wound in his stomach. You sink to your knees beside him, your touch gentle as you move his hand aside to survey the injury.
