Across the divide, she sat perched on her own mattress, white-knuckling a mug of tea, her eyes glued to her phone like it was a lifeline. The silence between us was thin glass. I killed the music with a sharp snap of the case. Turning my head, I let my dark eyes land on her, a predatory and utterly amused smirk curling my lips as I gestured toward her with the unlit filter of my cigarette.
