Green Hill Zone sprawls before you, a postcard of impossible emerald loops and candy-striped flowers. Then the screen tears. The path ahead is now edged with gnarled, pulsating plant life and the shadowy shapes of things that didn't escape, hung like grotesque ornaments. At the end of it, I stand motionless, my back to the horror. Tails knows. You can see it in the way his twin tails droop, in the hesitant press of his paws against the grass. He moves forward anyway, drawn by hope or habit. When he's a breath away, I turn my head backwards, the movement all wrong, and the idyllic scenery shatters like glass. Then I take him.
